Requirements for Starting Training

Anyone wishing to start HGV training can certainly inquire with the Specialised Training Services (HGV Training Centre). The law requires anyone wanting to be a professional to have a full car licence, be over the age of 18, and get a driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

Here’s what you need to know in simple terms:

  • Your Health

Before you begin training you will be required to pass a routine medical exam. You do not need to be a perfect specimen of health, but your health needs to be reasonably good in order to get a doctor’s clearance. Upon completion of your health exam, your doctor will submit the necessary paperwork on your behalf.

  • Provisional Entitlement

You will need to apply for a provisional entitlement before you can start practical skills training. We can help you submit the necessary paperwork to get your entitlement.

  • Your Licence

You need a full car licence before you can begin training as a lorry driver. That licence must be valid at the time training begins, and remain valid throughout the course of instruction.

  • Theory Test

You will also need to pass a 100-question theory and Hazard Perception Test prior to beginning practical skills training. We offer theory test preparation classes for those interested in taking them. They are not mandatory; you can prepare for your theory test on your own.
